Advection-dominated Accretion Flows: Optically Thin Solutions
General properties of advection-dominated accretion ows are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the optically thin branch of solutions, which has very high ion and electron temperatures and is thermally stable. This solution branch has been applied to a number of low-luminosity accreting black holes. The models have resolved some puzzles and have provided a straightforward explanation of th...
متن کاملGlobal Structure of Optically Thin, Magnetically Supported, Two- Temperature, Black Hole Accretion Disks
We present global solutions of optically thin, two-temperature black hole accretion disks incorporating magnetic fields. We assume that the ̟φ-component of the Maxwell stress is proportional to the total pressure, and prescribe the radial dependence of the magnetic flux advection rate in order to complete the set of basic equations. We obtained the magnetically supported (low-β) disk solutions, ...
متن کاملCoronagraphic Observations of Optically Thin Debris Disks
The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) offers a coronagraphic imaging mode with angular resolution of 0.026"pixel-1. In combination with with the appropriate subtraction of reference star point spread functions (PSF) the coronagraph is capable of achieving contrast ratios of '"'-'1000. We present some of the first ACS observations of the optically thin debris disk HD141569A and discuss new resul...
متن کاملAdvection-Dominated Accretion Disks: Geometrically Slim or Thick?
We revisit the vertical structure of black hole accretion disks in spherical coordinates. By comparing the advective cooling with the viscous heating, we show that advection-dominated disks are geometrically thick, i.e., with the half-opening angle ∆θ > 2π/5, rather than slim as supposed previously in the literature.
متن کاملAdvection-dominated Inflow/Outflows from Evaporating Accretion Disks.
In this Letter we investigate the properties of advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) fed by the evaporation of a Shakura-Sunyaev accretion disk (SSD). In our picture, the ADAF fills the central cavity evacuated by the SSD and extends beyond the transition radius into a coronal region. We find that, because of global angular momentum conservation, a significant fraction of the hot gas flo...
